Background

We are seeking a qualified Psychologist to provide professional mental health and psychosocial support to patients affected by conflict, displacement, SGBV and other psychological challenges, ensuring compassionate, confidential and high-quality care in line with MSF standards and principles.

As a psychologist, you will play an important role in delivering individual, family and group psychological interventions, assessing patients’ mental health needs, identifying cases requiring specialized referral, and supporting the wider MHPSS response. Working closely with the medical and mental health teams.

Duties and responsibilities

• Carrying out evaluation of mental health needs of patients and establishing a diagnosis and a plan of treatment. Informing the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and the drug treatment to follow and referring patients to other health professionals whenever necessary, in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and improve the patient's condition
• Implementing the Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocol, identifying possible victims of SGBV and referring them to the medical team so that they receive the necessary treatment. 
• Providing psychological support and psychotherapy sessions (individual, family, group) to patients according to MSF protocols in order to improve their mental health conditions 
• Assisting and training staff members and resourceful people whenever necessary in order to enhance the scope of MH activities. Working in close collaboration with translators in order to ensure appropriate terminology and behavior during sessions.
• Collecting statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities 
• Informing the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective 
• Ensuring that all patient information is kept confidential.
• Working under the direct supervision of the Mental Health Supervisor (MH Sup) and the technical guidance of the Mental Health Activity Manager (MHAM/PMR), in line with the Khartoum MHPSS strategy and MSF OCBA mental health guidelines.
• Conducting individual, group and family counselling and psychotherapy sessions (including Problem Management Plus and Psychological First Aid) for patients presenting mild to moderate mental health conditions related to conflict, displacement and SGBV, in accordance with the inclusion/exclusion criteria defined in the project strategy.
• Carrying out mental health assessments using standardized tools (e.g. CGI-S scale) to grade severity, define a treatment plan, and identify cases that must be excluded and referred (psychiatric emergencies, severe/chronic patients, substance abuse, personality or developmental disorders) according to the referral pathway.
• Identifying and stabilizing psychiatric emergencies and life-threatening situations, ensuring immediate and safe referral to secondary-level facilities (e.g. Bashair Teaching Hospital, Al Anu Hospital) as per the SOP for psychiatric emergency referrals.
• Implementing the SGBV protocol, providing MHPSS counselling to survivors and participating in binomial consultations with the medical department while respecting patients' autonomy and referring for medico-legal certification to a medical doctor as required.
• Adapting and delivering MHPSS interventions for children and adolescents, using context-adapted, validated materials and community-based approaches.
• Supporting the Mental Health Supervisor in training, coaching and technical supervision of MoH counsellors, community health workers and other health staff on MH identification, MHGAP/PFA principles and referral pathways, and collaborating closely with translators to ensure appropriate terminology and behaviour during sessions.
• Providing Psychological First Aid and support to affected staff, relatives and the community in the event of a mass casualty incident, in line with the project's Mass Casualty Plan.
• Collecting, recording and reporting mental health statistical and monitoring data using the standard MSF individual and group data collection forms of the HMIS, and maintaining confidentiality and custody of clinical files and the Golden Book according to MSF data protection procedures.
• Contributing to the mapping and networking of MHPSS actors and referral partners and supporting the MHS/MHAM in keeping the referral system updated.
• Informing the MHS and MHAM of any clinical, ethical or operational issues affecting patient care, and contributing to the periodic review of this strategy as a living document.

Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required

• Essential: Bachelor’s degree in psychology.
• Essential: Valid psychology registration/license from Sudanese National Council for Medical and Health Professions.
• Minimum 2 years of work experience as a psychologist.
• Desirable: Previous experience in INGO’s.
• Demonstrated experience providing psychological assessment, counselling, and/or psychotherapy to individuals, families, or groups.
• Desirable: Experience in trauma, conflict, displacement, SGBV, or other humanitarian-related mental health settings is highly desirable.
• Desirable: Experience identifying psychiatric emergencies and making appropriate referrals is highly desirable.
• Essential B1 Level English, with Native or near native Arabic Language proficiency.
